SGEU Case Study

Using Motion Meetings, SGEU cut ratification time from 30 days to 2 — and tripled member participation.

SGEU's PS/GE unit — 11,000 members across Saskatchewan — needed to ratify a complex 3-year agreement fast. Their previous process took over 30 days of in-person committee travel. Converso ran 3 town halls timed for shift workers, followed by a 2-day online vote. Participation jumped from under 2,000 to 6,082 members. Travel time: zero.

"We are very happy with the results of our work with Motion Meetings. We highly recommend them for their service, support and approach to contract ratification. We saved time, money and engaged more members than ever before." — Lori Bossaer, Negotiating Committee Chair, SGEU-PS/GE
The voting challenge

A low-turnout vote isn't just disappointing, it's a liability.

Dispersed memberships, shift schedules, and geographic distances make it nearly impossible to get everyone into a room. Quorum failures, contested results, and chain-of-custody questions don't just delay decisions — they expose your organization to legal challenge. The standard for a defensible vote is rising. Converso manages every detail so your result holds.

Low
In-person-only votes routinely exclude shift workers, rural members, and anyone who can't leave a worksite — undermining the legitimacy of the result before counting begins
Labour relations best practice — OLRB, ALRB precedent
Days
Ratification and bylaw votes have tight deadlines. A process that takes weeks to organize defeats the purpose — and a botched vote means starting over
Standard collective bargaining and governance timelines
Zero
A single gap in chain of custody — a missing ballot, an unverified voter, an undocumented result — is all it takes to invalidate a vote that should have been routine
Election administration and labour law standards
The security problem and the participation problem arrive at exactly the same time.
You need every eligible voter to have a fair opportunity to cast a ballot — at 2 a.m., from a worksite, from a rural riding, from a condo unit — and you need every one of those ballots to be verified, timestamped, and fully auditable. Converso is built for exactly that. Every format. Every scale. Every vote documented.

Not just a platform. A fully managed voting service.

Converso is not software your team configures and hopes works on vote day. Every Converso vote is staffed by experienced professionals who've managed hundreds of ballots across a variety of organizations. We define the parameters, build the voter list, set up the secure system, monitor every ballot in real time, and deliver certified results your organization can stand behind — in arbitration, at an AGM, or in front of a returning officer.

Voting formats

Every format. Every membership. Every deadline.

Whether you need a critical member vote, a secure ratification process, or simply want to gauge sentiment on an important issue, we provide fully managed solutions across telephone IVR (Interactive Voice Response), online, in-person, tiled-door, and hybrid formats. IVR polling can be conducted as open self-selected participation or structured and weighted to reflect specific member groups or demographics. From secure online voting to large-scale telephone polling, we manage every detail so your process is trusted, your participants are heard, and your results withstand scrutiny.

Online Voting

Secure, browser-based ballots sent directly to verified member emails or via SMS link. Encrypted, secret ballots with participant verification before any ballot is accepted. Full audit trail from invitation through result certification.

Hybrid Voting

Simultaneous voting across multiple channels — phone, online, and in-person — in a single managed event. One unified result. Auditable across every channel. The right choice when your membership is in different locations and expects different ways to participate.

In-Person Voting

Staffed voting stations for conventions, AGMs, and in-person ballots. Voter verification at the station, secure ballot handling, real-time tally, and independent results certification. We manage the full logistics so your event committee focuses on the meeting — not the mechanics.

Convention Delegate Elections

Multi-position, ranked ballot, and threshold-based elections for union conventions, association AGMs, and board elections. Secret ballots, verified delegate registration, real-time results, and a complete election record — from first call to certified outcome.

Telephone Voting

Members call in or are called out and cast their ballot by phone keypad. No internet, no app, no login required. Reaches shift workers, rural members, seniors, and anyone without reliable online access. Verified, timestamped, and fully auditable.

Mail-In Voting

Paper ballots printed, addressed, and mailed to every eligible member — then tracked from distribution through return and independent counting. Full chain-of-custody documentation at every stage, with certified results and a complete audit trail. The right format when digital access cannot be assumed.

IVR Polling

Telephone IVR Polling

Telephone IVR Polling is an engagement and data collection tool that allows participants to respond to survey questions using their telephone keypad. Participants receive a call or dial into a survey and are guided through automated prompts that ask them to press specific numbers to indicate their responses.

IVR polling is ideal for public consultations, virtual town halls, straw polls, and large-scale stakeholder engagement because it is accessible to people without internet access or technical expertise. Responses can be segmented or demographically weighted for analysis.

Because the system works on any telephone, IVR polling is highly scalable, inclusive, and effective at reaching broad audiences quickly while maintaining a simple and familiar user experience.
